Project 01
"THAT'S NOT GOING TO WORK!"
The technical design for a 3D live-action show was stalled, so I was hired to fix it. The creative vision was at stake as some key assumptions pushed more budget into technology at the expense of creative. Many doubted my innovative plans that would return the budget balance and maintain the creative vision – here’s just a few:

-
"You can't sync multiple 70MM projectors without timecode." I consulted Don Iwerks, we performed tests, and we achieved perfect sync without timecode. This yielded significant savings on hardware & film prints, and dramatically improved reliability.
-
"All projectors must start simultaneously." Instead of uniform large rooms and identical film cabinets, I used my Lucasfilm experience to design a way to bring four projectors online only when needed, chasing in and locking up during the show. We saved on facility costs by reducing square footage, saved on equipment costs and again improved reliability.
-
"A rigid screen is necessary for the trick." Knowing it would harm the 3D images and was most certainly not the only way, I developed a soft screen system as a quiet parallel effort. When the rigid screen failed 3 months before opening day, we implemented my soft screen and with 24/7 dedication with a team of incredible vendors, we made the deadline.
The creative vision was fully realized while innovating new ways to achieve it - saving costs, improving reliability and accelerating schedule. The show ran for several decades, delighting millions of guests.
