Two theme parks were being developed by a major Japanese company, known for their worldwide leading IP characters.  We joined as Executive Director, leading technical design to achieve the creative vision. Based initially in Los Angeles, we relocated to Japan for production and installation. From the start, we realized that our #1 job was helping the contractor succeed.  Key considerations where we had a big impact included:

• Cultural Awareness: Our team, new to international projects, received training on Japanese culture that we respectfully implemented from the start, enhancing trust and increasing efficiency.

• Design Comprehension: Bridging the language barrier and differing documentation styles, we quickly pivoted to in-person reviews to align creative designs, speeding up the approval process and building strong relationships - both professional and personal.

• Vendor Leadership: We established clear design standards from the start, and supported vendors with compliance to local regulations and specific requirements, helping them navigate and succeed in the Japanese environment.  This improved turnaround time and reduced change order risk.

• Value Engineering: We balanced creativity and budget by collaborating with Japanese vendors and the IP holder, finding cost-saving solutions that maintained and sometimes improved creative design.
